With all the years of paint work on this Mazda, I splurged a bit and got a high quality 2k primer sealer from eastwood. Hey, it’s splurging for a $2012 build. I wanted to make sure I got good adhesion on everything from old paint, rust, old primer and old paint. The new location I’m working in has no power to the section I’m using, so I had to run extension cords for the air compressor which meant I had …

Well, this is the stage of the build that’s a bit depressing and humbling at the same time. Per a post I made several months ago, it’s at this point in the build that we announced we would not be attending GRM this year. My father in law had a sudden passing and I ended up having some medical issues of my own that needed attention. All this mounting up in August meant there would be no way to complete …

Well, I’ll keep this post brief. Progress is moving forward on the RX3, but due to the unfortunate passing of my father in law and personal health issues of my own, I don’t believe the Twitchy Racing GRM RX3 will make it to this year’s challenge. We lost too much time and don’t feel it would do the car justice to compete in the condition its in. However, for all the followers of the build… I’m going to take a …

So up until now, all the bodywork has only cost roughly $50 in materials. As anybody who has done bodywork before knows, the cost is your time really. I had about $12 in sand paper rolls for the orbital sander, $18 in metal and welding spool and another $20 in filler and rattle cans. I’ll have the actual cost sheet up a little later, but the goal of this car was to compete within the $2012 limit for GRM, so we’re sticking …

Finally getting back to updating this thread. I didn’t realize how far behind it was! I left off with the shaving of the fuel door, and the rocker panel repairs. I won’t keep going on with the photos of the filler, but needless to say, many areas on the car were sanded down and given a new coat of filler. Here I will start with the rest of the engine bay strip down/out and clean up. Lots of years of …

So I apologize on having to “backlog” these updates. It was a hectic summer with the loss of my father-in-law suddenly followed by kidney stones for me.. fun huh? That’s enough to take the wind out of any sail. Enough about the excuses, back to the car… I left off with the repairs on the driver’s front fender. The repairs turned out fairly ok. My focus on this entire project was to repair old body work and move on as …

We finally got around to installing the number plates. They were ordered from 5X Racing and are great quality. Unfortunately for them, we didn’t want the 5X Racing logo and placed ours over it. We also installed the Mazda decals on the side. Overall, I’m pretty please with the result.

I decided that my original suspension just wasn’t up to the task considering it was from 1994 and it was time for an upgrade. Bill went ahead and got Koni Sport shocks for his RX-8, so I went with those as well. I also got Racing Beat linear springs, Prothane bushing kit, and PowerFlex bump stops. I was able to clean up the front control arms and weld the stabilizer link mount since that is a weak point.

BUDGET SPENT SO FAR: $1,025 (estimated, will post a final sheet when time allows) No, really… they do. As an initial inspection and punchlist is put together for the RX3 it’s plain to see that we have a lot more to do than what we originally hoped for. Right now, the first order of business is the bodywork. We’re still working on locating a decent powerplant core (12A) in rebuildable shape and since we all can’t stand to climb into the …

The plan

In the last post, we finally got the RX3 into the garage and work has slowly started to begin, we had to give some thought to an overall plan. As usual when building a car, plans can and usually do change, but for now… this is the basic goal (sorry for lack of detail, but we’re playing it by ear): Respray to white (no more red/pink/blue/yellow) 12A Half Bridge Carbon style roof, hood and trunk lid Kumho tires New dash As we …
