This will be the first post on the new website for Twitchy Racing’s RX8. The car has been around for about 5 years now and has undergone a few upgrades to make it a capable racer in NASA Mid Atlantic’s NASA-X Championship Autocross, primarily located here in Central/Southern Virginia. For the first post, I’m outlining the death of the car’s former suspension setup. I had a set of the JIC FLT-A2s adjustable coilovers on this car for about three seasons …

Bill 1976 Mazda RX3 Comments Off on What $1,000 Buys You

BUDGET SPENT SO FAR: $1,000 In the first post, I introduced you to the project car but probably left a good bit of detail out. The purpose of the GRM challenge is to build a competitive car for under $2,012 and starting with a fully built SCCA ITA car may seem to be a bit optimistic at that price range, but give me a few minutes and you’ll see why the car was so cheap. Before I get down to …

BUDGET SPENT SO FAR: $1,000 In November, 2011 – an answer to our desire for building a Grassroots Motorsports Magazine $2012 challenge car spoken through a Craigslist ad. Somebody had listed a 1976 Mazda RX3 former ITA car for sale in NC. As it would turn out, it was currently sitting at Rotorsports Racing in Kannapolis under the care of a long time rotor-builder and racer well known in our community. The asking price, $1,500 without the engine or $2,500 with a …

Bill Videos Comments Off on Bill’s VIR-Patriot Course Run 3/25

This was by far the most fun I’ve had in the car to date. The weather wasn’t that fantastic, but at some point, we all need to learn to race in the rain right? Unfortunately, as Mikko mentioned, another rotary bit the dust that day. The owner seemed fairly confident after the incident though that the repairs won’t be too harsh and he’ll be back up and running before too long. From what I could tell, looks like the car …

Mikko Von Kutzleben Videos Comments Off on Mikko’s VIR Circuitcross run

Unfortunately I didn’t get video of my epic spin+recovery. Fortunately though, we all managed to make it there and back in our cars without any real troubles outside of the weather on the way down. Unfortunately, the day wasn’t incident free. A 2010 RX-8 had a head on encounter with the barriers. Billy was talking to the guy and had a closer look at the car, so he’ll have to chime in about how bad the damage really was. It …

Bill Videos Comments Off on In Car Commentary from VMP 2/12/2012

Decided to do a little different type of video at this event. Mounted the GO PRO up in the corner of the passenger side windshield and swapped backing plates with the non-wind proof version. Even with the windows down, it worked out much better. “THIS ONE’S FOR YOU GREG”…. catch the major drift by Mike at the 1:15 mark in the video… hard to see from that angle, but it was quite spectacular. We’ll have to mate up my video …

Bill Events Comments Off on Bill’s run 11/20/11 VMP

This was my fastest clean lap of the day. I bested this run with a 55.11 but managed to clip a cone on the fourth gate. As it was, the car did fairly well – one ignition misfire (still playing with dwell times) and NO rebound left in the struts. Time to send everything off to get rebuilt and get ready for 2012 Championships!!!
